BELFAST BUNCH HOT COPS RINSE OUT CYNICISM WITH ‘PASSIVE PASSIVE’
Three-piece bring sarcastic, wit-fledged charm to their latest single.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Hot Cops.
Hot Cops are in a rut. The Belfast trio paint emotions like the best of them, and in their twisted ‘Passive Passive’ track, they straddle with crazy. “I think I’m getting better, and it’s great to be deluded,” they chant with sarcastic edge, and it’s at this point that they go from a promising bunch into potential anthem-penners.
It helps that the group appear to pen giant, sky-rocketing melodies for fun. On the one hand, they’re spiralling 100mph into a pit of despair, but there’s also a universality to their madness. For every intense realisation, there’s something new to latch onto.
The new single is set to gain release as a 7” on Paper Trail Records next month, and it’s up there with Cloud Nothings’ doom-and-gloom peaks, or Parquet Courts’ concrete-embellished bouts of frustration. It’s being launch with a show at Dublin’s Sweeney’s Bar on 3rd February - get tickets here.
